Jeremy Heatley's Mount Everest Base Camp Trek

Help Jeremy Raise $18,192 As He Climbs 18,192 Feet

Background:

Jeremy has been involved in fundraising for the MS Society for nearly 20 years. He began with participating in the Houston to Austin “MS150” bike tour which he completed five times without any real understanding of what MS is all about.  It was before the sixth ride that his wife was diagnosed with MS.

Since then he has been involved in volunteering and fundraising for the MS Society, promoting awareness on accessibility issues in Ontario and serving for seven years on the City of Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee.

When? - Starting October 3rd, 2008

Why? -  Why would a 60+ guy want to spend 16 days trekking through the Himalaya’s most of that time there is no electricity, no cell towers, no bathrooms or showers and the real risk of being stuck by altitude sickness.

Bucket list? – No I don’t have a list but if I don’t do it now I may never get the chance again to be one of about 5000 people to get to EBC each year.

Adventure? – definitely, a vastly different culture, new sights, sounds and experience something so remotely different from anything I have ever done before.

Goal – a motivational goal that has been the focus and justification of ten months training including hiking through knee deep snow on the Bruce Trail in January and February but ultimately trying, in a small way, to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis and enabling those affected by MS to enhance their quality of life.

Reason? - To raise $18,192 for the MS Society to support client services and research into this disease that impacts not only individual people but also that persons family and friends for the on a daily basis.

How can you help ?

By sponsoring Jeremy at the rate of $1 per foot all the way up to his goal of reaching Mount Everest Base Camp and the peak of Kala Pattar (18,192 feet). Your support can help find a cure for MS and through the MS Society client services group support those who suffer from the disease.

100% of the funds raised will go to the MS Society. All costs and expenses of the trip is self funded.

Trip Introduction

The trek will organized and fully supported by Himalaya Glacier Treking, a local Nepal Adventure Company - http://travel.himalayanglacier.com

"Sherpa villages, the home of the world's highest Buddhist monasteries and the highest peaks on Earth". The Everest Base Camp Trek is probably the most famous trek in the world - and deservedly so. It's taken millions of years and unimaginably powerful forces to create this mountain range; the Himalayas are literally what happens when continents collide. It's even so vast that it's changed our global climate system - and nowhere is this more vividly demonstrated than in the Everest region. The most spectacular views in the whole world.

The 19 day Everest Base Camp Trek goes right into the heart of the Himalayas. Taking in the famous trading town of Namche Bazaar, the world's highest Buddhist monastery and Everest Base Camp itself, where Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set off on their epic journey in 1953. But best of all you get to see Everest itself; to see the earth's greatest accomplishment and witness its power and grace first-hand.

The next five days are spent retracing our steps back down to Lukla, the flight back to Kathmandu and hot showers, comfortable beds and all the food and amenities of modern life that we learnt to live without during the last two plus weeks. Then the long journey back home to Burlington.
